Lunar New Year: Bay Area celebrations and events The iconic San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade returns to the heart of San Francisco, an annual event that has been going on since the 1860s Walk through Chinatown right now, and you’ll see stacks of red envelopes blanketing shelves, markets with overflowing displays of ripe pomelos, and families dressed up for Lunar New Year celebrations. The year of the snake kicks off Wednesday, and the 15-day new year celebration will be marked across many cultures. The Year of the Snake is upon us as communities across the Bay Area celebrate Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year or Tet. Here’s a sampling of ways to join in the celebrations.
