Soon after CAFAM was established on August 8, 1988, the organization held a small banquet for Chinese New Year (CNY), the first major event organized by CAFAM to ring in the lunar new year. It wasn’t until 1991 when South Portland Public Library approached CAFAM to organize a fair that the first true CNY fair was born. Chinese New Year is traditionally a 15-day celebration that includes wearing the lucky color red, paying respects to ancestors and cleaning the house to drive away bad luck. Daytime Chinese New Year Festival. The Chinese New Year daytime festival is 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. from January 29-February 23, 2025. In celebration of the official beginning of the Year of the Snake, the garden is celebrating three weeks of Chinese New Year with special activities. Activities at the daytime festival include: Chinese New Year at Lan Su Chinese Garden. January 29-February 23. The nearly monthlong festival features hanging red lanterns, performances, light displays and activities. Attend the Chinese New Year the daytime festival or the lantern viewing evenings.
