Happy Lunar New Year! Spanning from January 29 to February 12, Lunar New Year is a time for celebration, bonding with family, and honoring ancestors for many Asian communities in Boston and beyond. 2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake which is predicted to be full of knowledge and grace. With family and friends, learn about the unique histories and customs of the holiday with these celebrations Lunar New Year at MFA Boston 5 to 10 p.m. Jan. 30. One event that will take place later this week is a celebration at the Museum of Fine Arts displaying Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean artwork. The museum will have a $5 minimum, pay-what-you-want general admission starting at 5 p.m. Thursday to mark the occasion. Although the start of the Lunar New Year officially fell on Feb. 10, the city’s festivities will begin on Feb. 18 with the Cultural Village, held at the Lunar New Year Festival in Peabody Essex Museum, Salem (February 15, 2025) Just 22 miles (35 km) away from Boston, Salem's Peabody Essex Museum hosts an annual Lunar New Year Festival, which usually lasts from 10 am until 5 pm. The event has been happening since 2003, drawing in more than 800,000 people over the years. The most exciting event of Lunar New Year in Boston Chinatown is Chinese New Year parade. This parade features drums, cymbals, lion dancers, dragon dancers, firecrackers and Chinese traditional food. Lion dances in parade are a custom which keeps away the evil and brings good luck. As a kid growing up in Boston, celebrating the Chinese New Year each February was one of my favorite school activities. One class would “turn into” a chinese dragon and run around the school creating all kinds of noise and excitement! And this S aturday marks the start of Lunar New Year. The 15-day period from Feb. 10-24 kicks off the Year of the Dragon. Festivities across the Greater Boston area have already begun, and as the official Chinese New Year Festival in Washington DC area is host by Asian Community Service Center (ACSC) annually. Usually it is one day in-door events with cultural performances including dragon and lion dances, delicious Asian foods, New Year Parade, Culture exhibition, Craft show, language, health and business booths, and children’s activities, among other attractions. This is the 2nd most important Chinese festival outside of Lunar New Year and is the equivalent of Thanksgiving. Watch live cultural performances, shop local street vendors, and nibble on moon cakes in Chin Park on the Greenway.
