Since its inception Lancaster’s Chinese New Year Festival has been organised by Popber, a Community Interest Company set up to help businesses in the city and supported by Chinese students from Traditional Chinese dance by Manchester Chinese Academy of Dance. Be mesmerised by the grace and elegance of dancers trained for over 15 years in both China and the UK, performing exquisite pieces that blend classical techniques with modern interpretations. Authentic Chinese orchestra ensemble with Pagoda Arts. Lancaster’s Chinese New Year Festival is set to be a roaring success as the city celebrates the Year of the Tiger. Throughout January, the city centre streets will be festooned with traditional Chinese lanterns in preparation for the feast of indoor and outdoor entertainment taking place. This year’s event theme is Reunion and Blessing. Lancaster’s first festival of 2024 will celebrate the best of Chinese culture as the city marks the Year of the Dragon. Lancaster is the only place in Lancashire where the Chinese New Year is marked so publicly and by mid-January, up to 600 Chinese lanterns will adorn New Street, Penny Street and Market Street as a taster for the Festival. Lancaster’s Chinese New Year Carnival takes place from 10:00 – 18:00, and includes: Dragon and Lion dance parade; Traditional Chinese music and dance performances; Kungfu demonstration; Hanfu Fashion Show, featuring traditional Chinese clothing from various dynasties; Face painting, cultural crafts and workshops, including calligraphy The Lancaster Chinese New Year Variety Show takes place on Saturday January 27 at the Lancaster Grand from 7pm to 9pm and tickets are on sale now. This year is the Year of the Dragon and organisers Popber say the evening will showcase the rich tapestry of Chinese culture. For the past three years, Lancaster’s Chinese New Year festival has been organised by Popber, a Community Interest Company set up to help businesses in the city and supported by Chinese students from Lancaster University. Susan joined Lancaster AAPI after volunteering to teach toddlers and kindergarteners a year-long cultural programme at Montessori Academy of Lancaster. On 6th February, the Confucius Institute held their second Chinese New Year Carnival to celebrate Chinese New Year on Market Street in Lancaster City Centre. Traditionally, Chinese people would be having the show night before the New Year Day to wish everyone good luck in the new year and family could watch the performance together.
