The prosperity toss, also known as “Lo Hei” or “Yu Sheng” is a yearly affair among families and friends. Not only does the colour looks vibrant, but its sweetness does also serve as a great appetiser before your Chinese New Year feast begins! As Chinese New Year approaches, some households stock up on pineapple tarts, others prefer nian gaos or love letters. Gong Xi Fa Cai 恭喜发财 (Offer your greetings as the yusheng is placed Lo Hei is a communal activity where families and friends gather to toss the salad ingredients while chanting auspicious well-wishes to bring in good luck. The dish plays on homonyms in Chinese: “yu” 魚 (fish) sounds like 馀 (abundance) and “sheng” 生 (raw) sounds like 生 (life), implying “abundance of wealth and long life.” Lo Hei is a yearly Lunar New Year tradition of tossing yu sheng (raw fish and vegetables platter) to bring in good luck and wealth. But it’s more than just shouting “Huat Ah!”, here are 18 Mandarin phrases to say when you add the ingredients into your Yu Sheng and while tossing it.
