From Wednesday 29 January until Sunday 16 February, the Asian Events Trust with funding from Wellington City Council and other partners, are bringing Paint the Town Red, the Lunar New Year Festival, to Courtenay Precinct and the waterfront. Check out some ways to join in on the festivities below and to celebrate the year of the sssnake. Wellington’s much-loved Chinese New Year Festival rebranded to the Lunar New Year Festival in 2022. Asian Events Trust presented this celebration which became the mainstay of Wellington’s events calendar, providing a platform for local community groups to showcase their talents and engage the wider community to experience and be enriched by Wellington’s iconic Lunar New Year Fireworks Display has been confirmed for 2025, taking place on Saturday, 1 February at 9:30 pm – thanks to support from Stonewood Group. The Lunar New Year begins on 29 January, marking the transition from the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake. To welcome the New Year, a free two-week festival programme will run from 1 to 16 February. Courtenay Place kicks off the festivities on 1 February.
