Read on to learn more about the annual Lunar New Year celebrations in Portland, all of which are open to the public. Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is traditionally a 15-day celebration that includes wearing the lucky color red, paying respects to ancestors and cleaning the house to drive away bad luck. Soon after CAFAM was established on August 8, 1988, the organization held a small banquet for Chinese New Year (CNY), the first major event organized by CAFAM to ring in the lunar new year. It wasn’t until 1991 when South Portland Public Library approached CAFAM to organize a fair that the first true CNY fair was born. It will be held at Cape Elizabeth High School this year, due to mold issues at the Westbrook venue.
