The earliest origin of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival can be dated to the “dragon worship” in the Prehistoric Times (1.7 million years ago - the 21st century BC), while the most popular origin is closely related to the great poet Qu Yuan in the Warring States Period (475 – 221BC). The holiday commemorates Qu Yuan who was the beloved prime minister of the southern Chinese state of Chu during the Warring States period, about 600 B.C. to 200 B.C., and is celebrated by holding dragon boat races and eating sticky rice dumplings called zongzi, which were southern Chinese traditions.
