From Wednesday 29 January until Sunday 16 February, the Asian Events Trust with funding from Wellington City Council and other partners, are bringing Paint the Town Red, the Lunar New Year Festival, to Courtenay Precinct and the waterfront. Asian Events Trust presented this celebration which became the mainstay of Wellington’s events calendar, providing a platform for local community groups to showcase their talents and engage the wider community to experience and be enriched by The Lunar New Year begins on 29 January, marking the transition from the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake. To welcome the New Year, a free two-week festival programme will run from 1 to 16 February. Courtenay Place kicks off the festivities on 1 February. As night descends Wellington’s harbour will light the night sky to ward off evil spirits, making way for a new year filled with health, happiness and prosperity for all Wellingtonians. Legend has it that fireworks were used to drive away evil in China when it was discovered that a monster who terrorised villages was afraid of the colour red and loud noises. The fireworks, supported by Stonewood Group will kick off Asian Events Trust’s (AET) Lunar New Year Festival. Lunar New Year celebrations will get off to a fiery start with a fireworks display on Wellington’s waterfront on Saturday 17 February 2024. Wellington’s iconic Lunar New Year Fireworks Display has been confirmed for 2025, taking place on Saturday, 1 February at 9:30 pm – thanks to support from Stonewood Group. The Fireworks Display will be preceded with performances in Upper Frank Kitts Park with Taiko drummers (8pm to 8.30pm), Chinese dragon dancers, and other performers (8.30pm to 9.15pm) - see Dragons on the Waterfront event. The Lunar New Year Fireworks Display is part of the 2024 Lunar New Year Festival organised by Asian Events Trust. Wellington’s Lunar New Year Fireworks Display will take place on Saturday, 1 February at 9:30 pm. Tens of thousands of Wellingtonians are expected to brave a cold summer’s evening to see the annual fireworks display that heralds the start of the Lunar New Year.
