To celebrate Chinese New Years we made a Chinese lions head. This is a great way to celebrate Chinese New Years with kids. They can learn about Chinese Cultu Learn how to make your own Lion Head at home! This is a fun activity to do with your family to celebrate the Lunar New Year. THE EVENT ON FEBRUARY 13, 2021 H 1. Fold a piece of coloure Chinese New Year’s, sometimes referred to as the Lunar New Year, is based on the moon, while the Gregorian calendar is based on the sun. The Chinese zodiac identifies the 12 animals that have a year dedicated to them once every 12 years: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Lion dances are an important part of Chinese celebrations, especially Chinese New Year. It is thought to scare away evil spirits and to bring good luck. The lion (a costume operated by two people) dances to the beat of loud drums, gongs and cymbals. So the chinese lion dance is an important part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Watching the lion dance brings good luck and good fortune to the New Year. Part of the lion dance ritual – is for people to hang a head of lettuce into their doorway. The dancing lion tries to “catch the lettuce” and then tosses it into the crowds watching. We brought our lion head to school on the first day of Chinese New Year for celebration, did story-telling about the beast “Nin”, taught the kids how to write red banners for Chinese calligraphy, and delivered red envelopes and taught them how to greet people in Cantonese! We did lion dance close to the end and it was definitely a huge hit!! The Lion Dance is done as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations and includes a group of dancers sharing a costume and performing an intricate series of movements and steps. Some Lion Dance costumes are elaborate, with giant three-dimensional heads that include mouths that open and shut as well as eyes that blink. Perfect for a dancing lion’s mouth. And so the project took form. What you will need for this Lion Dance Craft for Chinese New Year: Printable template for lion’s head 2 paper tubes Tissue paper 2 pipe cleaners Beads, buttons and pom poms Jewellery wire Craft glue Hole punch Hot glue gun (for adult use) Print out your template and colour it in. One year when I was still teaching, I came across a large empty cake box just before Chinese New Year from a child’s birthday party the other day. I immediately saw an opportunity to create a Lion’s Head for a Lion Dance since we had spent all of the past week talking about Chinese New Year.
