COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Jan. 29, Asian American communities around the U.S. will ring in the Year of the Snake with community carnivals, family gatherings, parades, traditional food, fireworks and Lunar New Year follows the 12-year cycle of animals as explained by Chinese mythology. Depending on which version one believes, essentially there were 12 animals in a race or on a journey. The order in which they completed this task is now the order of their Zodiac symbols. It begins on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 and is celebrated through February 12, ending with the Lantern Festival. The Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendars traditional to many east Asian countries. Ohio University Southern will host a celebration of Chinese New Year traditions and cuisine on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 3:30 p.m. in the campus library. Professor Yehong Shao-Lucas, a native of China, will lead the event, which is free and open to the public.
